Installation of EWi PRO eaves to a university supported research & development project aimed at evidencing best practice and innovation
The SOLCER/LCBE Team partnered up with Warm Wales-Cymru Gynnes, who specialise in the low carbon renovation of social housing, to design and install test systems to be implemented into each property. This Research & Development Project presented an excellent opportunity to objectively implement and demonstrate the capabilities possible within low carbon residential building refurbishment and to work with the Welsh School of Architecture on innovative low carbon technologies as well as best practice solutions.
The aim of the SOLCER/LCBE Test Systems ‘Retrofit’ Project is to integrate low carbon test systems into five existing RSL owned residential buildings, to demonstrate how they perform in-situ. All five test systems are fully monitored and evaluated by the SOLCER/LCBE team to report on their in-situ performance.
Warm Wales–Cymru Gynnes called on the knowledge and advice of the EWi PRO team to design and supply a complete rain water solution both on the main house as well as the flat roof extension. We were also requested to design bespoke deep box aluminium window cills to replicate the existing cills and ensure there were no exposed junctions and thermal breaks around the window openings.
We used aerogel insulation both on the window reveals and underneath the bespoke cills to ensure that the property received a maximum thermal upgrade, and the concern around window reveals, raised by many including the BRE was met head on through our innovative approach and constant strive to raise the bar. Seamless integration was required with both an Integrated Photovoltaic Roof on the main house as well as a GRP fibre glass flat roof to minimise the risk of cold bridging, as well as ensuring no risk of water ingress in future years whilst satisfying both the end client and all the delivery partners’ requirements from an aesthetic view point.
Overall, we are extremely pleased and proud to be associated with such a prestigious research project and look forward to working on more cutting edge retrofit projects where our expertise and continued strive for best practice, and a professional approach to all retrofit solutions can be achieved and rolled out on a nationwide scale. We are focussed on raising the awareness and improving EWI detailing to help protect and enhance our UK Housing Stock. This is a must and we won’t stop until this is realised and implemented by all involved in the EWI retrofit industry.
"As part of the Low Carbon Built Environment (LCBE) project we gave EWi PRO a challenging task of seamlessly integrating external wall insulation with a photovoltaic array. The end results are fantastic and the attention detail that has gone into integrating the EWi PRO gutter system with the Roof-Integrated Photovoltaic System is remarkable. As well as the innovative interface between the photovoltaic and gutter systems, I am also very happy with the design of the window cills which really improve the look of the finished property. Overall it has been a joy to work with a company that is so passionate about getting the detail right, both from an aesthetic point of view and in relation to energy performance."~ Dr Richard Hall - Low Carbon Built Environment - Technical Engineer
